Gregg says Obama’s economic picks show ‘strong and early leadership’

U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg (R-Rye) praised the economic team selected by President-elect Barack Obama and said it ensures a "coordinated handoff" during the transition period.

"President-elect Obama has shown strong and early leadership by his choices of Timothy Geithner as Secretary of Treasury and Lawrence Summers as head of the White House National Economic Council," Gregg said in a press release. "These are two individuals who comprehend the depth and seriousness of risk that our nation faces due to the severe downturn in economic activity, especially in the financial sector."

Shaheen calls Lieberman vote ‘right outcome’

U.S. Sen.-elect Jeanne Shaheen (D-Madbury) said that the vote to keep U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) as chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee "produced the right outcome."

"I think that Senator Reid and the Senate leadership set up a fair process and I think it produced the right outcome," Shaheen said in a statement. "We have so much work to do to get our economy moving and I am happy that this is resolved so we can get to the important work of the people."

Earlier today the Senate Democratic caucus voted 42 to 12 to keep Lieberman as chairman of the Homeland Security committee despite his support of Republican presidential nominee U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). However, they also voted to strip Lieberman of his seat on the Environment and Public Works Committee.

Gregg, Sununu in DC for session

Both of New Hampshire's U.S. senators are planning to be in Washington D.C. to work during the upcoming lame duck congressional session.

U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg (R-Rye) and U.S. Sen. John Sununu (R-Waterville Valley) will participate in committee hearings and cast votes throughout the week.

Shaheen announces staff hires

U.S. Sen.-elect Jeanne Shaheen (D-Madbury) has announced who will fill the top positions in her senate office.

Manchester native Maura Keefe will serve as Shaheen's chief of staff. Keefe is also the former chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) and served as a senior advisor to Shaheen's senate campaign.

Cook calls Gregg seat ‘solid’ Republican

The Cook Political Report has released their first senate rankings for the 2010 cycle and says that U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg (R-Rye) has a "solid Republican" seat.

According to the ranking solid races, "are not considered competitive and are not likely to become closely contested."

U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg (R-Rye) told reporters that he is running for another term to the U.S. Senate in 2010.

Shaheen declares victory

MANCHESTER--Former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen (D-Madbury) has declared victory in her challenge to U.S. Sen. John Sununu (R-Waterville Valley).

"Today the people of New Hampshire spoke at the ballot box," Shaheen said. "And they said loud and clear they want a new direction. Today New Hampshire voters said they want a senator that will be a strong independent vote."

Sununu concedes to Shaheen

BEDFORD--U.S. Sen. John Sununu (R-Waterville Valley) has conceded the Senate race to his opponent former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen (D-Madbury).

"Really there's nothing more exciting than laying out your case and letting the voters speak," Sununu told supporters. "Tonight unfortunately the voters spoke, and we didn't have enough votes. The fact remains it's a privilege to participate in the democratic process."

U.S. Senate race offers stark contrasts in political environment

A lot has changed since Jeanne Shaheen (D-Madbury) and John Sununu (R-Waterville Valley) first ran against one another for the U.S. Senate seat in 2002.

Sununu is now the incumbent Republican Senator, while Shaheen comes to the race having spent the last couple of years working at Harvard and chairing John Kerry's presidential campaign.

In 2002, the day before Election Day, a UNH poll had Sununu with a one percent lead over Shaheen. Now that same poll shows Shaheen with a six-point lead over Sununu.
