NORELLI RE-ELECTED SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE

 

 

            CONCORD – Members of the New Hampshire House of Representatives were sworn in today, marking the beginning of the 161st  session of the New Hampshire General Court.

            Of the 400 members of the third largest legislative body in the English-speaking world, 264 were re-elected, 40 have served in the House at some time in the past, and 96 are freshmen. There are 224 Democrats and 176 Republicans.

Lynch says state not relying upon federal govt. for budget help

John Lynch

Gov. John Lynch (D-Hopkinton) spoke to reporters after attending a meeting with President-elect Obama and said that he is not depending on money from the federal government to help New Hampshire close its current budget deficit.

"I'm certainly not counting on money from the federal government to deal with our remaining $75 million shortfall, so I'm not counting on that," Lynch said on a conference call with reporters.

Lynch was attending a meeting of the National Governors Association which met with Obama in Philadelphia and said he does not think Obama will give states money that would make the current state budgets worse.

Pride ranks N.H. governors

Concord Monitor columnist Mike Pride ranked the last eight governors of New Hampshire.

Pride decided to do the ranking in light of comments former Gov. John H. Sununu made about current Gov. John Lynch (D-Hopkinton). Sununu called Lynch "the worst governor in New Hampshire history."

Lynch proposes $57 million in budget cuts

Gov. John Lynch (D-Hopkinton) has issued two executive orders that would cut state spending by almost $57 million and is working with the legislature to cut another $20 million.

Appearing before the Joint Legislative Fiscal Committee, Lynch announced that state agencies would immediately cut their spending by $53.6 million. Lynch also said he was enacting several measures to save the state another $3 million. These actions were approved by the committee.

Kenney blames state GOP for defeat

State Sen. Joe Kenney (R-Wakefield) says that the New Hampshire Republican Party did not do enough to assist him in his gubernatorial campaign against Gov. John Lynch (D-Hopkinton).

"From the beginning, the state Republican Party backed away from challenging Gov. John Lynch," Kenney wrote in an op-ed piece in The Union Leader. "When I made my decision to run, Lynch was on the verge of a free ride. Republicans suggested he might end up the Republican nominee. I could not stand on the sidelines and watch this happen."
