CONCORD-- Secretary of State Bill Gardner was unanimously elected to a 17th term as secretary of state.
Gardner has been serving in the position since 1976 and is currently the longest service secretary of state in the country.
"We have all played a part and shared the memories that future generations will only be able to read about," Gardner told legislatures.
State Sen. Jack Barnes (R-Raymond) nominated Gardner for secretary of state and the nomination was seconded by state Sen. Lou D'Allesandro (D-Manchester) who was Gardner's high school civics teacher.
Gardner also quoted from a 1892 speech given by Frederick Douglas in New Hampshire. Douglas was in the state in 1892 to honor New Hampshire resident John Parker Hale who was the first United States Senator to call for the abolition of slavery.
"This nation has certainly been turned upside down in a very short time," Gardner said quoting from the Douglas speech.

The Best
Bill's the best, and visionary as well. His fight for same-day voter registration back in the 1990s has kept New Hampshire from having the nightmare problems of other states, where in some cases one must "register" weeks in advance just to be able to exercise the right to vote. That procedure also creates immense logistical problems and denial of the right to vote on Election Day. Here, one can vote.
Longest serving and visionary all in one = the best.
Congratulations to him!
Splaine get a life!
You love him because you know that you could never get elected without same day registration, even in Portsmouth. I had hoped that the lack of a straight ticket would have sent you packing but unfortunately a rising tide floats all boats, even ones that should be in the scrap pile! No secretary of state in the country has done more to encourage voter fraud. He can't even tell you where the memory cards are from this election. I can they are in Methuen Mass at a former elected Democrats office! You should love him you wouldn't be able to have a pulpit without him.
His fight for same day voter registration has delivered the state from red to blue. I am so happy that the people that live at cross roads from out of state can vote in ward four. Thank you Bill!
