John Stephen (R-Manchester) in Manchester: Photo Credit: PolitickerNH.comMANCHESTER-- Former New Hampshire Health and Human Services Commissioner John Stephen used a line from his father to rally supporters on Sunday, two days before voters head to the polls to choose the Republican nominee to challenge U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-Rochester).
"My father used to say a politician thinks of the next election and a statesman thinks about the next generation," Stephen said at Jillian's restaurant. "In your heart of hearts in this election you know who the politician is and who the statesman is. Let's win this election for the next generation."
Stephen's father, Bobby Stephen, is a former Manchester state senator and John Stephen has been using his father's line since he started running for the 1st Congressional District seat. Stephen is running against former U.S. Rep. Jeb Bradley (R-Wolfeboro) in the Republican primary .
Stephen, taking another shot at Bradley, said Republicans must return to their "core values."
"We need to elect people that are going to represent the core values of this party," Stephen said. "When we don't abandon those principles we're in the majority."
Although he predicted victory, Stephen warned supporters: "We cannot be satisfied until we get over that finish line."

WE NEED NEW LEADERSHIP and JOHN STEPHEN
Jeb Bradley has demonstrated to me by his acts and deeds that he is not a man of conviction when it comes to possessing core beliefs. As a member of the NH Legislature Jeb voted against the death penalty on a number of occasions, but now because it’s politically expedient and New Hampshire is in the throngs of two high profile capital punishment cases, Jeb has changed his mind and is now in favor of capital punishment.
In his two terms in Congress Bradley, repeatedly voted against drilling for oil in Anwr and off the coast of the continental United States, but suddenly when oil prices eclipse $4.00 per gallon Jeb is now a believer in drilling anywhere. If he only believed in it when he represented us in 2002 and the prices were still in the $2.00 per gallon range, we now would be in a much better position to declare our independence from foreign crude oil. With the potential of $5.00 per gallon oil this winter Jeb has finally seen the light.
We need new leadership and inovative thinkers in Washington who think beyond the next election and I believe John Stephen will be that new leadership when he is elected.
PLEASE JOIN WITH ME ON TUESDAY and VOTE JOHN STEPHEN as our candidate to face Carol Shea-Porter in November.
Well said, Lou.
Well said, Lou.

Maybe his father did say that, maybe he did not, but someone else said it first, and a long time ago:
"A politician thinks of the next election; a statesman of the next generation."
James Clarke
US politician (1854 - 1916)
Ironically, Clarke was a Democrat - something Stephens used to be when he supported Michael Dukakis for president against George H. W. Bush.
Social studies 101
Stephen's views of how the political process works sound like something out of a third grade primer. He is totally clueless and there is no depth to anything he has uttered during the entire campaign.
Why?
Because his "handlers" write his speeches and he is simply the delivery boy. The Union Leader which endorsed and then reeled in Frank Guinta now has Stephen in their clutches thus creating a required vetting of any future utterances.
He will make an even lousier congressman than he was a bureaucrat, which also was merely a puppet show.
