GREGG, SUNUNU SUPPORT GOVERNOR’S REQUEST FOR
DISASTER DECLARATION IN FIVE NEW HAMPSHIRE COUNTIES
Senators seek immediate approval from FEMA
following July 24 tornado, severe winds, and heavy rain
WASHINGTON, DC – United States Senators Judd Gregg and John Sununu (R-NH) today (7/29) urged President Bush to immediately approve a major disaster declaration for five New Hampshire counties in the aftermath of the July 24 tornado, severe winds, and heavy rain that caused one fatality and damage to homes, businesses, and public infrastructure.
“Local, state, and federal officials have done a tremendous job helping the central portion of our state recover from the severe damage brought on by last Thursday’s tornado, severe winds, and heavy rains,” said Senators Gregg and Sununu. “As officials continue to determine the full extent of losses, it is clear that homes, businesses, and public infrastructure have suffered extreme damage and are in need of federal assistance. We strongly urge the Administration to approve the state’s request for a major disaster declaration to ensure New Hampshire receives the aid it deserves.”
The following is the full text of the letter sent to President Bush on Thursday, July 29:
“We are writing to urge FEMA to immediately approve the State of New Hampshire’s request for a major disaster declaration for five New Hampshire counties under the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act.
“The July 24, 2008 tornado, severe winds and heavy rain caused one fatality as well as major property damage to homes, businesses and public infrastructure in Merrimack, Rockingham, Strafford, Belknap and Carroll Counties.
“Local emergency management officials have taken every step possible to initiate recovery efforts. However, given the scope of this disaster, we believe the federal government must take action to assist local and state officials and affected homeowners. While the extent of the damage is still being assessed, it is clear the cost of rebuilding and restoring the affected areas will be significant. Thank you in advance for giving the State’s request your immediate attention and approval.”
