"LIE" HEAP: THE SUNUNU RECORD ON HOME HEATING ASSISTANCE

Sununu talks about funds for LIHEAP, but he has voted against funding seven times in Washington

(Manchester, NH) - John Sununu has signed many letters expressing support for the LIHEAP home heating assistance program and sent out numerous press releases touting his "leadership" on the issue, but in Washington D.C., he has voted seven times against additional funding for the program, including one vote against the program as recently as six months ago. With the price of oil hovering near $130 per barrel, New Hampshire families need a Senator in Washington who actually stands up for them, not Sununu's empty rhetoric.

"John Sununu gives lip service to the home heating assistance program while he's in New Hampshire, but just six months ago, he voted against additional funding for the program for the seventh time in his Senate career," said Alex Reese, press secretary for the NHDP's Coordinated Campaign. "Thanks to George Bush and John Sununu, New Hampshire families are already struggling with sky high gas prices and a crumbling economy, and they're already worried about how they'll make it through the winter. But Sununu is just part of the problem, saying one thing in New Hampshire and doing the opposite in D.C."

Despite the rhetoric, Sununu has voted seven times in the Senate against funding for LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, and he opposed increasing funding for the program by closing corporate tax loopholes.

Sununu's Record: Voting Against Home Heating Assistance

  • Sununu Has Voted Seven Times Against Additional Funding for LIHEAP. [Senate Vote #336, 9/10/03; Senate Vote #250, 10/5/05; Senate Vote #357, 12/15/05; Senate Vote #57, 3/16/06; Senate Vote #126, 3/29/07; Senate Vote #390, 10/23/07; Senate Vote #8, 2/6/08]
  • Sununu Voted to Protect Corporate Tax Breaks Instead of Increasing Funding for LIHEAP. [Senate Vote #57, 3/16/06]
